Tubeless setup for small wheels
Tubeless setup for kids as I was getting fed up carrying lots of different size inner tubes on rides.
As my kids mostly do DH or Enduro cycles I thought I would give it a go. I checked that their 24″ wheels where tubeless ready and I had new Maxxis minion DHF/DHR tyres. I first tried Stans but the tape was really stiff so it didn’t sit well in the smaller wheels. I then tried Muc-Off 25mm tape which fitted perfectly. But I couldn’t get the tyres to pop onto the rim even with a pressure bottle filled to 120psi. A friend suggested adding another layer of tape which actually worked (maybe that is why Stans tape is thicker?).
My son’s 2017 Norco was a bit more difficult, the air was gushing out of the wheel rim join. So next day with the tyres both flat I put a bit more sealant in and pumped it to 5-10psi and spun the wheel lots, this seemed to work and next day no lost air.
The Muc-Off Presta valves are great as they have lots of different rubber mounts. I used the rectangle one for these small wheels. However they don’t make Schrader version which I needed for another bike. I tried Joe’s no flats valves but these didn’t hold air in at all. I switched to Nutrak which worked perfectly.
