Evolution of parents cycling with kids

If like me, you love cycling and want your children to join in your cycling adventures, this is a little summary of our journey with growing kids.

Cycling with young kids/babies

As we had twins we wanted to take them for cycling trips safely. The Burley Bee trailer was brilliant for this. Super stable, loads of room inside (for toys/snacks), waterproof and most importantly they loved it. We used it everyday to take the twins to Nursery, much quicker than using the car and the kids had much more fun.

Shorter journeys where the kids want to do some riding too

The kids enjoyed riding on their 12″ bikes but didn’t have the stamina or skill to do longer rides. It was also too dangerous for them to ride on the road, so how do we get them places? The answer was the FollowMe Tandem. Basically this device is connected to your rear skewer and the kids wheel is lifted up off the ground, so now you control their steering but they can still pedal. We found this excellent for shorter journeys.

Long distance riding with kids

We wanted to do longer rides and especially mountain biking. However the kids bikes with their small wheels meant it was never going to be a long or fast ride. The Burley Bee trailer, although brilliant, wasn’t really designed for going off road and was getting a bit small for both of them together. So we bought WeeHoo’s bike trailers. These were amazing, the kids could pedal so would get some exercise, but they were safe in their seats (with seat belts), had pockets for drinks/snacks/teddy and are built to go off road.
